Is #Paranormal the New Normal?

Vampires. Werewolves. Faeries. Seems there’s no shortage of the paranormal these days, either in books or tv or even conversation. Then there’s all the other paranormal talk out there, too. The parapsychological stuff like clairvoyance, reincarnation, near-death experiences and apparitional experiences. And so much more.

A long time ago, decades and decades ago, folks used to talk about the paranormal as part of entertainment. Think Dracula or The Twilight Zone or Rosemary’s Baby. My, how times have changed. These days, we just can’t get away from this stuff because it’s everywhere. But I think there’s a difference between the vampire paranormal angle and the parapsychological angle because, to me, one type of paranormal is more believable than the other. Others may disagree and that’s okay, but I truly believe that there’s more out there than meets the eye, and that it’s not just our three-dimensional world that surrounds us. It may not be completely explainable but it’s there, waiting to be discovered or uncovered until it becomes the ‘norm’.

Here’s an example. About two weeks ago I was having a very fitful sleep. Somewhere in my twilight sleep, I was tossing and turning and as I rolled over in bed I saw someone standing off to my right. It wasn’t an apparition because he (and yes the person was definitely a he) was real. I saw him. I wasn’t scared and he wasn’t there to frighten me or send a message. He was simply someone passing through from some other side. The next morning when I woke up, I had a lingering sense that this man was my father. A younger version of my father, who passed away in August 2011. It felt pretty cool.

I do believe that our brains and maybe even our souls are tied to something bigger than us and that some people, for whatever set of reasons, are more open to experiencing parapsychological activity or connecting with someone or some thing on the other side. The big question is, what is that other side? And why does this happen?

This is a fascinating aspect of life that I love exploring, particularly in my novels. I’m not sure why it captures my attention so — because it didn’t always — but it’s not something I’ll be giving up any time soon. And I’d love to share my thoughts and stories with you about it. So as we head into the second month of 2013, my goal with my blog is this: to chat up the unexplainable and maybe things that are scary, and see where it leads us.

So what about you? What do you think about the paranormal? Believe in it? Have an experience with it? Think it’s just another way for people to get attention or make money? Would love to know what you think…

  1. I’ve heard tales of paranormal activity like that by lots of people. I don’t question the possibility of that at all. I love the “what if” Scenerio in fiction. Normal life with a twist.

  2. I’m kind of in the same boat with this, but I don’t think the paranormal is as prevalent as many people seem to think it is. I’m of the opinion that spirits are with us, but only rarely do they make an appearance, which makes said appearances even more special and profound. Thanks for sharing your story!

There is definitely an astral dimension and afterlife. It is not a “new” normal as ancients always knew and believed in these before the advent of the Abrahamic religions. But Truth will always surface, I believe.

I believe. I’ve lived in a house with a benign spirit (that my cats were nonetheless terrified of) and have had a similar dream experience as you, shortly after my mother-in-law passed away. In the dream, she was telling me that my unborn baby and I would be all right (I was sad that she passed away before she got to meet him) and then she hugged me… I awoke at that point with the ‘body memory’ – not sure of how to explain it better than that – of the pressure of her arms around me and the feeling of her presence. I still mourned her after that, but my grief didn’t have as sharp a sting as it did before the dream.

  5. I think I’m still like Mulder: “I want to believe.” Not sure I’m there yet, but I do believe we haven’t figured it all out yet 🙂

Thank you for sharing your vision as well. There’s not much I wouldn’t do to have a vision of my grandmother again.

Yes, I’m with you, Terri! This is the kind of paranormal that fascinates me and I think you’ve explained why–because it certainly feels real. I think it’d be fun if faeries and elves did exist, but I have no belief in them other than for fantasy sake. At the same time, I am driven to keep an open mind. Spirits, on the other hand, are a whole different story. Past lives-yep, I’m a believer. I’ve blogged about a few of spirited stories, and it’s interesting how I, too, was not afraid. I felt blessed for the experience.

How wonderful to have a visit from your dad.

Looking forward to reading more of your stories!
