The Challenging Art of the Book Blurb

Most of my blog posts are for my readers and fans and folks who just like to see what I’m up to. Today’s blog is more for the writers out there, but I’m certainly not going to turn you away if you aren’t one. 🙂

Book blurbs can be a writer’s worst nightmare, but it’s often the main way (and maybe the only way, depending on the reader) to sell a story. For a writer, writing a blurb can translate into hours of frustration in distilling a 70,000 or 80,000 or 90,000 word book down into three or four succinct, brutally short paragraphs.

For a reader, it can be the difference between hitting “1-click” or moving on to another author.

For a writer, it’s a make or break situation.

I must have done something right, because my very own blurb for In This Life, Book 1 of the Past Life Series, is featured on Glenna Mageau’s blog title, “An Example of What Makes a Fiction Blurb Compelling”.

Glenna’s got some really good tips on her page — some of which were good reminders for me even though it was my blurb she used for her example.

Want to know more? Check out Glenna’s other tips as well on her site, The Write Tips. She’s also got an upcoming webinar you might find useful.

It is a very good blurb! And I think you’re right – “blurbing” goes totally against everything we’re creating as writers but Glenna could actually have a GREAT way of creating them. I’m off to try it now! Thanks!

Hi Terri. It was great to us your fiction book blurb as a good example of one that is well written. Thank you for re-sharing it and for sharing about my upcoming Webinar this Thursday. 🙂

Perfect timing. I sent my blurb off about half an hour ago to the artist, then came up with several changes that will make it a little tighter and a lot better.

    I hate blurbing! 🙂
