Most of my blog posts are for my readers and fans and folks who just like to see what I’m up to. Today’s blog is more for the writers out there, but I’m certainly not going to turn you away if you aren’t one. 🙂
Book blurbs can be a writer’s worst nightmare, but it’s often the main way (and maybe the only way, depending on the reader) to sell a story. For a writer, writing a blurb can translate into hours of frustration in distilling a 70,000 or 80,000 or 90,000 word book down into three or four succinct, brutally short paragraphs.
For a reader, it can be the difference between hitting “1-click” or moving on to another author.
For a writer, it’s a make or break situation.

I must have done something right, because my very own blurb for In This Life, Book 1 of the Past Life Series, is featured on Glenna Mageau’s blog title, “An Example of What Makes a Fiction Blurb Compelling”.
Glenna’s got some really good tips on her page — some of which were good reminders for me even though it was my blurb she used for her example.

It is a very good blurb! And I think you’re right – “blurbing” goes totally against everything we’re creating as writers but Glenna could actually have a GREAT way of creating them. I’m off to try it now! Thanks!

Perfect timing. I sent my blurb off about half an hour ago to the artist, then came up with several changes that will make it a little tighter and a lot better.
I hate blurbing! 🙂

Hi Bob, it is a thing isn’t it? I used to hate writing them but once I discovered a much easier way to write the fiction book blurb it is now not daunting at all. Good job with your blurb. What do you write?

“They sound like thrillers in my head.” 🙂 I have one suspense series going, and i managed to churn out a romantic suspense story along the way.
