Meet Author Lola Karns: Dr. Seuss lover, whistling aficionado, and that time she went out with a gorgeous rock star

The neat thing about interviewing authors is that you learn some very (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) interesting things about them.

Take author Lola Karns, for example. A writer who’s no stranger to contemporary romance (or dust bunnies at home), she’s had her own share of adventures. Like that time she went out with a gorgeous rock star and had no idea who he was until…

What? You thought I’d spill all right here, up front? Nope. Not gonna happen. 🙂

Read on to learn more about Lola Karns, and some new books to explore.

MEET LOLA KARNS

What’s the first book that made you cry? Or laugh?
I’m sure there were other books along the way, but Dr. Seuss’ I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today, and Other Tales always made me laugh, especially the way my dad read it.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing a character of the opposite sex?
Making their movements meaningful and character revealing and not mere fidgeting. Writing men is more physical that writing women.

What was your best writing experience ever?
I loved the process of going into audio for Lucky Traveler. I got to experience my book in a (tee-hee) novel format. At one point, I got chills, and then realized I was the one who had written those powerful words.

What was your worst writing experience ever?
I was two-thirds through a manuscript that centered around a trans-girl when I realized I failed to make her the point-of-view character she needed to be. I set the manuscript aside, which is a shame because Tammi is an amazing character. She deserves a rewrite.

Did you grow up with books?
If so, what were your favorites and why? I grew up in a book loving house. We didn’t always have money for new clothes, but we always found money for books. My dad liked to end each shopping trip with a new book. He claimed the books would keep me “off the streets and out of trouble.” It didn’t always work. I got in a lot of trouble for sneak-reading Stephen King book during school.

Who was the most famous person you ever met?
I went on a date with a gorgeous guy I met at a jazz club in Budapest. We spoke in German, a second language for both of us. He gave me a tour of the city, we went to an art gallery and got some food and then it got weird. People, mostly girls, came up to the table and asked for his autograph. On the way to the gig he invited me to, I saw his face on a billboard and some store fronts. My tour guide was a huge rock star in his native country.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?
The kids and I talk about this all the time and I always circle back to Plasti-man. Being able to reach things on the high shelf would be life-changing.

What secret talents do you have?
I am an outstanding whistler.

Nearly a year after she found her boyfriend with his hand up someone else’s dress, Midwestern school teacher Keira Jones contacts a dating service in a faraway town for a much-needed confidence boost and night of adoration.

Logan Collins doesn’t remember much about the night he screwed up his cousin’s wedding and his life. But with five months of sobriety under his belt and most of his amends made, he celebrates with a 1Night Stand.

When Madame Eve sends these ex-lovers to the same Las Vegas hotel room, the two of them must discover whether good luck or bad luck guides their travels.

Author Bio:

Lola Karns worked many jobs (such as bartender, shipping clerk, secretary, concierge, document translator, doctoral candidate) in many states (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia, Virginia, and Minnesota). When she doesn’t have her nose in a book, she’s writing them. Books, pens, and notebooks are portable and easy to hide when the boss comes around.

She is the author of contemporary romances Bad Traveler, Lucky Traveler, and Winter Fairy. She shares her home with her husband, two children, three cats, and an assortment of dust bunnies.

  1. Hi Lola and Terri. Thanks for the fun interview. The great thing about dust bunnies is that you don’t have to feed them. The bad thing about Hungarian rock music is understanding the lyrics.

Great interview, ladies. Love that your dad read to you, Lola.

Plasticity would be so helpful. I’d love teleporting as a super power. So handy in rush hour.

  3. What a fun interview! I love hearing about fellow CR sisters. Though I guess we’re also S&S sisters now, too. A little odd on the super hero power, though, but I’m tall, lol. Too fun.
